French Press Brewing Guide
French Press Brewing Guide
The French press is the most forgiving way to brew a full-bodied, rich cup. Coffee steeps in water, then a metal mesh filter separates the grounds, letting natural oils through for a heavier, rounder texture.
What You Need
- French press
- Burr grinder
- Digital scale
- Kettle and timer
- Fresh whole-bean coffee
The Baseline Recipe
- Coffee: 30g
- Water: 500g (1:16 ratio)
- Grind: Coarse, like sea salt
- Water temperature: 200°F (93°C)
- Steep time: 4 minutes
Step by Step
- Preheat: Rinse the press with hot water and discard.
- Add coffee: Grind 30g coarse and add it to the press.
- Bloom: Pour about 60g of water, stir gently, and wait 30 seconds.
- Fill: Add the remaining water to 500g. Place the lid on without pressing.
- Break the crust: At 4:00, stir the top layer and skim off any foam.
- Press and pour: Press slowly and steadily, then pour everything right away so it doesn’t keep extracting.
Fixing Your Cup
- Muddy or bitter: Grind coarser, or pour off immediately after pressing.
- Thin or sour: Grind a bit finer, or extend steep to 5 minutes.
- Too much sediment: Let the cup rest a minute, and leave the last sip in the press.
